What is in mould printing?

In-mould printing refers to a printing technique where the graphics or text is imprinted directly inside the plastic mould before the plastic is injected. This results in the printing being integrated or moulded into the finished plastic part. The in-mould printing process involves:

1. Designing the mould: The mould is designed with a recess where the printing will be located. This ensures the printing will be visible once the part is formed.
2. Printing the image: The desired image or text is printed onto a special film using UV ink or toner. The film is designed to withstand heat and pressure.
3. Inserting the film: The printed film is placed into the recess in the mould. It is precisely positioned and secured.
4. Injecting plastic: Molten plastic is injected into the mould at high pressure and temperature. The plastic flows around the film, embedding it inside the part.
5. Cooling and ejecting: The plastic cools and hardens in the mould. The finished part with in-mould printing is then ejected.
6. Post-processing: The part undergoes finishing processes like trimming, polishing, cleaning, etc.
The key benefits of in-mould printing are:
• Permanence: The printing becomes a permanent part of the plastic part, withstanding wear and tear.
• 360 degree visibility: The printing is fully visible from all sides and angles.
• Cost-effective: Since no additional printing step is required, it is cheaper than surface printing.
• Durability: The printing has the same durability and lifespan as the plastic part itself.
However, specialized printing material, moulds and equipment are required for in-mould printing. But when done correctly, it provides a durable and cost-effective printing solution for plastic parts.Hope this overview provides a helpful explanation of the in-mould printing process and the benefits it offers.
